One of the biggest cultural contributions the City of New
York bestows upon visitors is it’s many museums of fine art.
The American Craft Museum is not one of those museums. The
objects in it’s collection are certainly works of art, but
they’re not what comes to mind when you first think of art
museums. The American Craft Museum challenges your opinion of
what constitutes high art because the exhibits are based both on
beauty and function. In other words, you won’t find too
many exhibits in a frame.
The American Craft Museum has beautiful works of art that are
also familiar and functional items like baskets, teapots,
chairs, etc. The collection demonstrates the innovative spirit
and creativity contemporary artists can bring to the everyday
world. The American Craft Museum is considered the premier
museum for 20th century American crafts. You ‘ll see common
items made from some uncommon materials like glass, clay, wood
and even chocolate.
Visitors to the museum are not only able to view the works,
but they also get the opportunity to create their own
masterpiece. In one workshop, participants use everyday items to
create new works that they can bring home.
The American Craft Museum offers several different workshops
and programs for both families and individuals including
"Meet the Artist" demonstrations where artists answer
questions, discuss technique, and interact with school groups in
a hands-on workshop. School Programs for grades K through 12
introduce students to the Museum, craft, and special
exhibitions. Call (212) 956-3535 for more information about
programs and the museum in general.
