First it was a campy 1980s movie, now it's a popular attraction
on Broadway. Footloose, the surprise hit based on the
Kevin Bacon movie, has danced its way into the Richard
Rodgers Theatre, known in the past for hosting Guys and
Dolls, among others. The story follows a young rock
‘n roller who’s just got to dance in a puritanical
town that made "getting down" against the law.
The stage adaptation has some of the more memorable tunes
from the movie, such as "Let’s Hear it for the Boy," as well as some new original songs. The camp
and kitsch factor is high, which makes for a a diverse
following; anyone from a Kevin Bacon nut to a fan of the
80s will enter through the doors. A cast of 37 will
entertain those who are not adverse to revisiting the 80s. It’s truly a matter of taste here. If you enjoy
this sort of thing, you won’t be disappointed, but you
probably will not be won over or converted if you are
reluctant to attend in the first place.
