What's New?    Inside Tips

Carnegie Hall is a centerpiece for concerts, with an emphasis on classical music. It’s located at 881 7th Avenue at 57th Street and has been there since 1891. For anyone looking to enjoy some of the country’s finest jazz, classical, or folk performances, we strongly suggest investigating this storied venue.

Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964, the hall is unique in several ways. First, it acts as landlord, with studios available for rent. In addition, the building is so committed to retaining its original architectural quality that any changes that are being considered must be granted approval by the Landmarks Preservation Commission. This is to ensure that everything about the hall is true to its original appearance and use. Concerts take place either in the main auditorium, which seats 2804, or the Weill Recital Hall, which is usually reserved for young musicians making their debuts.

Carnegie Hall presents over one hundred concerts and events each year, mostly classical but also incorporating some jazz, classical, chamber, and even choral music. Past performances include visits by the esteemed Vienna and Berlin Philharmonic orchestras, and the James Levine-led MET Orchestra makes regular appearances.

Since 1985, a new promotion entitled Carnegie Hall’s Music Theater Program has featured revivals of vintage American musicals by such individuals as Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, and Vincent Youmans. These events are usually hosted by the Weill Recital Hall.

Refreshments and dining are available in the Travelers Group Café and Rohatyn Room, which offers pre-concert dining and coffee during intermissions. A gift shop that sells souvenirs, books, recordings of past concerts, and other fare is also on site. A tour program that was initiated in 1987 continues to expand and is met with increasing popularity.

For more information on Carnegie Hall, its performers and ticket prices, call (212) 247-7800. The hall is one of the premiere venues in the world for classical performance, and it is highly recommended by patrons and critics alike. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to take in a show.
