Editor's Picks for Kids
Children’s Museum of Manhattan
The Children’s Museum of Manhattan is popular with parents
who live in New York because of their numerous programs and
activities. Although visitors probably won’t join any of the
continuing programs, children kids aged 2-10
can still have lots of
fun on a one day visit. There are numerous interactive games and
puzzles that are supervised by a friendly staff. The new addition
to the Children’s Museum is the exhibit John
Lennon's Real Love - The Drawings for Sean. This is a treat for
both parents and kids, as you get to see the drawings, figurines
and other trinkets John made to entertain and teach his son Sean.
New York Historical Society
OK, you might ask yourself, "what in the world is my child
going to find interesting in the New York Historical
Society?" . You might be surprised to find that the NYHS has
a terrific new permanent exhibition for kids called "Kid
City". KID CITY
features a child-sized recreation of Broadway between 82nd and
83rd Streets as it appeared in 1901. Kids can find out what it was
like to be a kid before their grandparents were even born. They
will learn how life was different when some children worked jobs
by day and attended school at night. They will also see how life
has remained the same by looking at vintage toys and games, or by
reading books about the city in a cozy book nook. While visiting a
family apartment, children can also try on turn-of-the-century
clothes similar to those worn by children in historic photographs
on display. All in all, it’s a fun experience for the kids and
parents get the opportunity to see the interesting exhibits
upstairs. The New York Historical Society is located about one
block away from the American Museum of Natural History, making it
a convenient stop on the tourist trail.
American Museum of Natural History.
Without a doubt, this is the best place in New York City for
children and their parents. Dinosaurs,
which are kid magnets, are abundant, with fully constructed
skeletons and bones readily on display. Youngsters will also enjoy
the sheer number of exhibits on everything from early man to how
the earth works. The interactive displays are very educational and
fun at the same time, so your child will be learning without even
knowing it. Don't forget about the IMAX theater, which shows
educational films on a huge screen that gives the "you are
there" illusion sure to keep the whole family entertained.
Located at Central Park West at West 79th Street, the
American Museum of Natural History provides a full day of family
fun.

World Trade Center
Besides being the largest building in a city full of
skyscrapers, the World Trade Center is also a great tourist
attraction, with everything from shopping to dining to magnificent
views. Top of the World, the observatory on the 107th
floor, is an attraction in and of itself, boasting a kinetic
energy wall sculpture, gift shops, tours, and even a simulated
helicopter ride through the streets of Manhattan. A large scale
model of the city rounds out the excitement here. Don't forget
about the TKTS booth located in the mezzanine--it offers
discounted tickets to both Broadway and off-Broadway shows.
Finally, don't forget to check out the Greatest Bar on Earth,
located here as well.
